About

The following principles underpin Arts-POP:

  • Arts-POP provides infrastructure for in-school learning in and through the arts that complements the important work being undertaken in a range of community settings – private homes, studios, churches, arts centres and arts organisations.
  • Arts-POP will help build arts education across urban centres and throughout regional and remote Australia.
  • There are five art forms specified in the Shape of the Australian Curriculum: The Arts. They are Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music, and Visual Arts. Arts-POP shows how each art form makes a distinct contribution to cognition by drawing on each child's senses and imagination. Each art form is valued equally within the generic learning area of the arts.
  • While some Packages of Practice focus on these specific art forms, others value and focus on connectivity; they illustrate the importance of arts integration and hybrid arts as a powerful and effective approach, especially in addressing the crowded primary school curriculum.
  • These Packages of Practice are underpinned by decades of research showing persuasive links between high-quality arts education and diverse and impressive educational outcomes.
  • Arts-POP shows how quality arts education can serve multiple purposes simultaneously. Consequently, while the arts engage students cognitively, in addition and at the same time, they act as creative, aesthetic, personal, social and cultural forces to help shape each child's process of meaning-making.
